a sybarite in paradise
reviewing the food & entertainment pleasures of Honolulu
I saw this last week and I’ve been a bit lazy writing about it. Not that it wasn’t a good movie. It just wasn’t the one I was expecting to see based on the previews. The previews made me think that I would be seeing a heady political thriller. I thought it would thoroughly examine the United State’s tenuous relationship with Saudi Arabia. I was expecting another movie like Babel or Syriana. What I got was an entertaining action flick.
The Kingdom works well as “just sit back and have fun action flick.” Don’t think too long and hard about it. It starts off being the movie I hoped for, but quickly changes into your average shoot em up, kill all the bad guys movie. The performances are all terrific. I particularly liked Ashraf Barhom as Colonel Faris Al Ghazi, the person the USA’s FBI team has to work with to solve the bombing crime that is central to the plot. Jamie Foxx also gives a especially good performance too.
SPOILER WARNING: don’t continue to read if you don’t want to know about the ending......
I was disappointed the film kills off Colonel Faris Al Ghazi in the final big battle scene. He was so good in his role that I really wanted him to live.
If you like action flix, go see this one. It doesn’t disappoint.
