a sybarite in paradise
reviewing the food & entertainment pleasures of Honolulu
Last night we went to Ryan’s before going to see “No Reservations”. I’ve been to Ryans a few times, but I’ve never seen it so busy. The bar was completely full. We had to wait about 5 minutes for a table and were surprised to walk around the corner into a mostly empty restaurant. They were probably pacing the seating so as to not kill the servers. Wise idea.
We started out with the Fry Bread and Onion Rings. Both were on the oily side, but acceptable. I ordered the Kalua Pork Sliders ($8.99) .
They came with limp, uninspired sweet potato fries, mango slaw and a ramekin of sauce. The slaw was merely sliced up mango and peppers, with no dressing. It was buried under the fries and sliders. The kalua pork was delicious. It had been broiled or griddle fried to make it crispy. The sauce was bourbon spiked BBQ sauce. It had a nice spiciness and really made the sliders sing. I think it was intended for dipping the fries in, but I made better use of it.
Howard had the Seared Island Poke Salad with Frizzled Ogo ($10.49), which he said was great. Our server was very accommodating in getting Andrew a veggie stir fry, off menu. He said it was perfect, exactly what he wanted.
Justin had the Spicy Thai Grilled Chicken Sandwich. It was a little sweet for his taste, but he liked it. His regular potato fries were nice and crisp.
Every time I’ve been to Ryan’s, my experience has been the same. It’s a reliable source of decent food at a good price. The service is good and the room comfortable.
